Incident Report for Sipalto Service

Postmortem

The issue affecting connectivity via Cogent on June 20th has been fully resolved.

We have received the following RFO (Reason for Outage) from Cogent Communications:

“Customers in or transiting Slough may have experienced severe service degradation on June 20th between 12:18 and 13:32 GMT.

During a routine configuration change on one of our core routers in Slough, unexpected behavior occurred resulting in entirely unexpected side effects.

As soon as the issue was noticed, our IP Engineering department was involved to urgently resolve the issue.

Please note that as a result of this issue, internal processes are being carefully reviewed to identify areas for improvement and help prevent similar occurrences in the future.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.”

Actions Taken by Sipalto

  • The affected peer was taken down promptly by our data centre provider to prevent routing instability and protect service performance.
  • Traffic was rerouted to ensure continuity for customers during the outage.
  • Once Cogent Communications confirmed the issue was resolved, our data centre provider delayed re-enabling the peer until off-peak hours to avoid route convergence disruption.
  • The peer was re-established during low traffic hours, with routing verified as stable.

Resolved

We have not identified any more issues over the last few hours and have observed that Cogent Communications have marked their outage as resolved.

We will continue to send all traffic via our alternative route for the remainder of today and once we are satisfied that there are no further risks to the Sipalto network we will re-route data centre traffic accordingly.

Monitoring

We have been made aware that an outage has occured at around 13.30 within the Cogent Communications network who are the provider to many major network operators in the UK. This has directly impacted our network located at Verne Data Centre in Central London.

As of around 13.50 our network traffic has been re-routed away from the Cogent Communications network via Telehouse Data Centre in East London which has restored all services.
